Googleが2011年7月20日、ディレクトリサービス「Google Directory」を閉鎖した。
現在、directory.google.com にアクセスすると"Google Directory is no longer available."というメッセージが掲載されており、情報検索をするならウェブ検索が最良であるとしている。また、ディレクトリを利用したいユーザーに対し dmoz.org を案内している。
GoogleディレクトリはDMOZ (Open Directory Project)のディレクトリデータベースを利用したサービス。Yahoo!ディレクトリに代表されるように、かつては人気だったディレクトリサービスも近年はアルゴリズム検索によるサービスが主流となっており、実質的に役目を終えている。
